After reading about Girls on the Run in the June, 2002 issue of Runner’s World magazine, founder Shari Kunz could not let go of the power the program would provide to young girls in the Wood River Valley. By August, the first session of 14 girls was up and running under the umbrella of the St. Luke’s Women’s Health and Fitness Celebration. Girls on the Run of the Wood River Valley obtained it’s 501c3 non-profit status in July, 2003 and became its own independent council of the national Girls on the Run organization and consistently runs over 100 girls through the program each year.
The Girls on the Run curriculum culminates with the girls completing a 5k (3.1 mile) event. Each fall and spring the program holds a 5k for participants and their families. In the summer of 2004, Girls on the Run held its 1st annual Community 5k Fun Run and Healthy Living Expo as a fund raiser for the program and to provide to the entire community a morning of accomplishment, celebration, and fun. The popular event continues each May, and in the Spring of 2008 celebrates its 5th anniversary and a new name... Wondergirl 5k. Participants and families of all ages and abilities come together each Spring for the 5k and to enjoy expo booths from community organizations offering healthy living information, fun, and activities for all. |
